Tribute – Friends

Mrs Efunjoke Coker

“Aunty” as she was fondly known in our family was a kind, gentle and disciplined professional; an educationist and a fine example for women of her generation and those she mentored.

She had the assignment and forsight of educating young girls, as teacher and principal of the foremost girls school in Nigeria (Queen’s College Lagos).

Aunty’s impact on the young ladies is evident as seen in the prominent individuals raised through the generations in Nigeria.

A devout christian and woman of  character whose impact in her sphere of influence will always be remembered in the history of female education in Nigeria.

She was praised by my late husband Engr (Chief) S O Fadahunsi for her achievements and transparency; setting an unmatched standard for education as a whole.

May Her Gentle Soul continue to rest in perfect peace; as we celebrate this Icon and applaud her legacy and contributions.

I was privileged to have provided her with legal services and advice
Mrs Coker epitomized the lost values of the past; punctuality, rectitude and a strict adherence to ladylike and courteous behaviour at all times.

Even though I insisted that it was a privilege to provide her with legal services and I would not charge her any fees, she overruled me, on her assertion of Yoruba respect for age, insisting I must accept the payment she proposed. She also insisted that I share a glass of sherry with her whenever I visited.

Her love for her family and for QCOG were always evident in our conversations about declining values and standards. She loved both with equal passion. She was a treasure to be with and will be much missed.

Dear Mummy, I bless God for the day your nephew introduced me to you as your nearby medical doctor to take care of you. You were always so wonderful, patient, loving and made my work effortless and easy.

I was always welcome to your home hence our relationship grew from patient/doctor to friend and mother. Thank you Mummy for your love, support, gifts both cash and kind. You taught me how to thank God in Yoruba dialect. ‘Oluwa e ti dara ju’. I always looked forward to seeing you on Sundays after church, you insisting on my sharing your breakfast. Even when I missed out some Sundays you were always quick to forgive me saying ‘Uyi you have been naughty but now you have come I forgive you’. Thanks so much Mummy.

I brought my daughter your old girl (2008) Idara and her spouse to be Sesugh. You blessed them. You once told me ‘Uyi I am tired, and weak not as strong as I used to be when I was younger’. I encouraged you. You lived on 91, 92, 93, 94 and 95years.

We, my husband Dr Anthony Usoro and I were there to celebrate 95th birthday with you. Mummy goodnight and rest in God’s bosom till we meet again.

Love,

Uyi Usoro

Aunty Joke, Sisi Ivy and Kofo (my mom) were childhood friends and remained close most of their lives.

I adored Aunty Joke because she was so stately, soft spoken with a great sense of humor when with her friends. I lost touch with her and only came back to her life in the last few years. Though her memory was failing, she was still a smart, funny lady with a lot of her old spark. I am so grateful to God for this opportunity and to strike up a friendship with Remi.

I shall miss aunty dearly but I know she is now at peace and reunited with her friends, “Ivy” and “Kofloat”

Goodnight, mama!
